smoke the moment

If John Lennon wore a robe and died on a cross 2,000 years ago, people would have called him their messiah.

"God is a concept by which we can measure our pain. I’ll say it again, God is a concept by which we can measure our pain.

I don’t believe in magic, I don’t believe in I-ching, I don’t believe in bible, I don’t believe in tarot, I don’t believe in Hitler, I don’t believe in Jesus, I don’t believe in Kennedy, I don’t believe in Buddha, I don’t believe in mantra, I don’t believe in Gita, I don’t believe in yoga, I don’t believe in kings, I don’t believe in Elvis, I don’t believe in Zimmerman, I don’t believe in Beatles, I just believe in me.

The dream is over, What can I say? The dream is over.  Yesterday I was dreamweaver but now I’m reborn.  I was the walrus but now I’m John.  And so dear friends you just have to carry on.  The dream is over."

- God, John Lennon

Criticise them while they’re here, worship them when they’re gone.  Such is human hypocrisy.  Lennon mixed some profound perspective with some brilliant weed.  He made statements that made people uncomfortable and frightened their small minds.  Listening to some of his songs does the same thing to me that the streets of Paris do to me.  They feed my subliminal needs.

But like the rest of us, Lennon was wrong about some things, because the dream is never over.  It just becomes a different dream.  So between you and me, let’s forget everything we think we know.  Let’s not make things wrong.  Let’s celebrate the chaos and smoke the moment before it’s gone.

There are so many things that I love about this post. Love the picture comparison between Lennon and Christ (scary, huh?). What a radical Son of God he would have been. Pot smoking and all.

I also love the comparison between his songs meeting your subliminal needs and walking the streets of Paris. Beautiful. And the smoke the moment is perfect!

Thanks for an entertaining post. I look forward to each one every day.

    I’m getting there.

” Working class hero ” was his greatest . That told it like it is, as opposed to ” Imagine” which told it like it never will be .

And I bet Lennon knew it .

I dated a guy once, who on the first date asked a lot of “getting to know you” questions, the first two being:

Are you a Lennon or a McCartney?
Are you a dog or a cat?

    I said Lennon and Cat.

    Wanna go steady, Candy?

    Miss you.

p.s. I think the third question was something like “conventional bed frame or futon?”

    Ugh!

  6. Richard Catto

@Anne: My ex-wife thought it was a good idea to get a futon. This was back in 1998.

It was small and cramped, hard and uncomfortable and low down on the ground so that to get up in the morning to take a piss required the exertion of the combined energy of the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.

    Aaah married life. Such bliss.

I now sleep a metre off the ground on a double sprung mattress.

    There really is no comparison.

I think perhaps it is a metaphor for the difference between married and single life, but perhaps I have become way too jaded for my age?

I totally agree on the metaphor-ish nature of futons versus lovely “double sprung beds” such as you describe, so you are not the least bit jaded!

At the time that I experienced those questions, I was all Lennon, Cat, futon, etc. etc. and now I’m all “My taste in music is ecclectic (translation: I can’t remember the name of the group I like, but I know the lyrics which I sing in my car), I have a teddybear pup (yes, that’s a breed!) and my double sprung bed is in a newly built house in a, dare I say it … okay, I’m going to say it … “subdivision!” … and yet I’m still hip, and freakish enough to ask Candy out on a date!

Great blog post. I always thought that Lennon was a genius. I’m an atheist to the core, so what he says rings true for me.

I wish there were no wars or religion, or poverty or hunger or famine or hate or crime or disease. Imagine.

    John Lennon sold records.
    Jesus sells eternal life.
    Choose your saviour wisely.

Your comparison between John and Jesus may seem clever but its equally trite and dangerous at the same time.

I like The Beatles’ music- but a dead pop star is a just another dead pop star.

Jesus is just another dead religious guru. Everyone dies, mate, even Jesus.

I agree with Richard Catto. 100%.

“Cos Jesus he knows me, and he knows I’m right, I’ve been talking to Jesus all my life, oh yes he knows me, and he knows I’m right, and he’s been telling me, everything is alright.”

  19. Candy Tothill

i told lennon. it’s the same thing dude.

  20. Richard Catto

@Candy Tothill: But did you ask Paul, because I think it’s important we get his take on this? ;)

  21. Candy Tothill
