last impression of america

23 September 2009 289 views 9 Comments

America smells like cinnamon.
Its flags fly from front verandas.
It smells like snow
and hot chocolate
on a sidewalk
in the dark.
America smells expensive
like Clinique’s Happy.
Its Wednesday afternoons
let the sun hang low in the sky.
It smells clean
like my hair after a shower
and the touch of your sheets
as the lights go out.

There are many sides to America, but I like this one you’ve captured very much.

is it fair to ask if you’ve been here of late? I swore I saw someone who looked just like you in Times Square a few weeks ago. . . but we weren’t drinking hot chocolate yet (or spilling it on the sidewalk). The last two lines of this poem are phenomenal. . . and the first dozen are pretty captivating too. Thanks for writing it.

Excellent plan :) I’ve got a very long term visa actually (10 years)… all I need is some cash!

There will always be a ticket waiting for you at the airport, any time you like.
